Oily Skin Saviours

People tend to demonize oily skin and try everything under the sun to mattify their faces and control oil production. Oily skin actually helps preserve the skin and prevent wrinkles as the skin is kept moisturised and smoother, we tend to lose the ability to retain moisture as we age, so oily skin babe have that head start! However, in the meantime, we do actually want to get things under control and not have to blot our faces 24/7, so here are some tips to keep everything in moderation.

1) Moisturise!

Lack of moisturising with oily skin can lead to an overproduction of sebum (or oil). This is because the skin is drying to keep up with the lack of moisture present. A good lightweight, oil-free moisturiser will help regulate sebum production without leaving your skin greasy; but bouncy, plump and refined. Some of our favourites are:

– KEM Hydradaze Moisturiser

– CeraVe Moisturising Lotion

2) Introducing an oil cleanser into your nighttime cleansing routine can be a game changer for your skin. Essentially, oil breaks down oil and bonds with the dirt, oil, makeup and SPF on your skin which are hydrophobic (cannot be dissolved in water). Go in with your regular cleanser after removing the film left from the oil cleanser and you’re good to go. Some recommendations:

– KEM Double Cleanse Duo

– The INKEY List Oat Cleansing Balm

3) Use blotting papers: If you notice excess oil on your skin throughout the day, use blotting papers to absorb the oil without removing your makeup. Soap and Glory do the cutest compact mirror with blotting sheets to help you quickly and discreetly reduce shine and touch up your makeup!

4) Choose makeup wisely: Use makeup that is labelled “non-comedogenic” or “oil-free,” and avoid heavy or greasy products that can clog your pores. On that note, remember to clean and replace your makeup tool frequently to prevent breakouts too, which oily skin tends to be more prone to. At Kem, we have a line of non-comedogenic makeup products with sets of brushes and tools to match.

5) Don’t over-exfoliate: While exfoliating can help remove dead skin cells and unclog pores, over-exfoliating can actually increase oil production. Drying out the skin too much with exfoliants, both chemical and physical can cause your skin’s natural barrier to be compromised, disrupting its ability to retain moisture. Some gentle exfoliants that can be used a few times a week:

6) Consider using a clay mask: A clay mask can help absorb excess oil and reduce the appearance of pores. Use it once a week to help control oil production. Here are some ones that are safe to use regularly:

– KEM The Mask Duo

– Peter Thomas Roth Therapeutic Sulfur Masque

Oily skin should be embraced, but there is no harm in regulating it and treating it if it is excessive.
